A fine tramp art box on a deeply layered pedestal base with a carved finial and diamond shaped decorations.
Inscription on the underside of the top reads by Jim Carrol “Alias” / Made by a convic patient 1893 (“Jim Carrol”) alias / a Civil War Veteran
I believe it was made in the same New York State Soldier’s and Sailor’s Home in Bath, NY where identified pedestal boxes by Mathias Hollenbeck were found or at a County Home in Lakeville, NY. where tramp art was also made. Most pedestal boxes were found originating from upstate NY and interestingly this artist was identified as a Civil War veteran and as a patient. I do not know what is meant by ‘alias’ or being a convic (sic) but the history of this tramp art pedestal box is most interesting.
