Monumental Tramp Art Mirror by John Martin Zubersky

A spectacular and monumental tramp art mirror by the esteemed historical tramp artist John Martin Zubersky who lived in Joliet, IL. He made these extraordinarily complex tramp art frames entirely out of wooden cigar boxes. His trademark style combines expressive sunflower corners, deeply layered rows with each layer having a different carving style and tulip carved edges. This example is among the largest found by his hand and was made at the height of his creative powers. We have added a newly discovered photograph of John Martin Zubersky with his wife Anna taken in the 1930s.

Similar examples are illustrated in Tramp Art Another Notch on pages 33 – 34, 268 – 269 and in A Legacy in Tramp Art on pages 88-91.

The frame dates to 1916 – 1920.
